Scraper Conveyors: Design and When to Choose One Over a Belt Conveyor
An enclosed trough instead of an open belt — design and when a scraper conveyor beats a belt conveyor.
What a scraper conveyor is
A scraper conveyor moves bulk material with scrapers mounted on an endless chain, inside an enclosed trough. Unlike a belt conveyor with an open belt, material in a scraper conveyor is fully enclosed from the environment.
Design: trough, scrapers, chain, stations
Main components: an enclosed trough (casing), a traction chain (one or two) fitted with scrapers, a drive station (drives the chain), a tail/tensioning station (maintains chain tension), and supporting and guide elements.
How a scraper conveyor differs from a belt conveyor
The enclosed trough protects against dust emission, material spillage, and precipitation ingress — important for hot, dusty, or hygroscopic materials. A scraper conveyor withstands higher material temperatures but runs at lower speed and wears the chain and scrapers faster than a belt.
Where scraper conveyors are used
Cement industry (clinker, ash transport), metallurgy (slag, scale), thermal power plants (boiler ash and slag) — anywhere material is hot, abrasive, or requires enclosure against dusting.
