What a screw feeder is
A screw feeder meters bulk material from a hopper or storage bin into a process using a rotating screw inside a trough or tube.
Operating principle
A rotating shaft with a helical flight picks up material at the inlet and moves it along the trough to the discharge. The screw's rotation speed determines the volume of material delivered per unit of time — which is what makes it a metering device rather than a plain conveyor.
Screw feeder design
Main components: a shaft with a helical flight (the screw), a trough or casing, a drive (gear motor, often with variable-frequency control for precise metering), inlet and outlet fittings, and support bearings.
Feeder vs conveyor: the difference
A screw conveyor solves the problem of moving material a distance; a screw feeder solves the problem of precisely metering material into the next process step (e.g., a kiln, mixer, or weigh hopper). They look similar, but a feeder is engineered for uniform, controllable delivery.
Where screw feeders are used
